A Winged Haiku

I had posted this only to Poets United, but as it seems perfect for the Haiku Heights prompt of March 13th, I'm adding the link below. Do stop by to read other poems about wings...

When I saw that the Poets United Think Tank prompt was ‘wings’, I immediately thought of Richard Bach, author of ‘Jonathan Livingstone Seagull.’ As a young wife and mother in the nineteen-seventies, I embraced his reworking of words which have with time become clichéd:

‘If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they're yours; if they don't they never were."Because it touched me deeply at the time, I offer my own interpretation of the quote...

I live close to the sea on the west coast of Canada and spend a lot of time watching seagulls. The photos above were taken at nearby Steveston and White Rock. My elusive quest for the quintessential shot of a bird in flight is ongoing!

    Lovely words, Lynette, and beautiful images. I especially love the bottom one, the way the light reflects off the water. The colours are wonderful.

    So beautiful. You reminded me of how that book litrally changed my life. I was an ocean person who didnt know I was an ocean person until I saw that movie and read that book..........then I knew it for certain. I collected ceramic seagulls, my home was full of them inland. Until I moved to the ocean and didnt need them any longer. I remember walking, one gray and lowering afternoon, along the beach at Combers, not another soul in sight, and how as a seagull flew low past me, I told myself "I feel like I'm inside the Jonathan Livingston Seagull movie". It was a lovely moment. Thanks for reminding me. You write such beautiful haiku and take such wonderful photos. What a treat this post was!

    Very, very well put, Lynette, and I love your seagull photos. The first one seems to be a young gull - I seem to see a dappled look about it.

    Lynette, that second photo makes my heart sing... the light rolling on the water is exquisite. A perfect illustration for your words. I agree, they are much more touching than the quote that inspired them.

    Wonderful Lynette! And I remember too how that book touched me (way back when ;>).. and I'm sort of ashamed to know that I later laughed as those words became so cliched.

    Lynette, catching a sea gull in flight is quite a feat. Your photo images especially the contrast of light and colour of the sea water surface is fantastic.
