A is for Airplane

This is my first time joining an alphabet même...in the past I've come across them already in progress, so I'm excited at the chance to finally play along.
For me, airplanes are endlessly fascinating. I spend many hours peering up at them from my house and car, (well, not while I'm driving!).
We're on a minor flight path to the Vancouver airport and while some complain of the noise, I enjoy the roar of planes as much as I do the sound of trains in the night.

And seriously, how many moments in life are as vibrant as that brief instant when the plane leave the runway and we're suddenly airborne? It never fails to thrill me.

These shots were taken at last year's Air Show, held as an annual event in the nearby town of Abbotsford.

It must be admitted that we rarely actually go into the actual show. The thought of crowding onto blacktop in the suffocating heat of an August day with thousands of others brings my claustrophobia  hurtling to the forefront. That said, we never fail to park under a shady tree and watch what we can from outside the gates.

  •  Even planes in disrepair are beautiful to me.

I once dreamed of earning my pilot's license, but think the time has come to leave the skies to those younger and sharper than me.

I will content myself with watching and dreaming  as my imagination soars along with them and will happily fly along as a passenger at every chance I get...

A huge welcome to you, Linette! We are neighbours as I live in Ladner! Your photos are AMAZING and I agree with you about the hot blacktop. But it never occurred to me to go someplace nearby and watch the skies. I must do that! Looking forward to seeing you next week with the letter B.

The synchronicity of these planes is astonishing to say the least. The performances can be quite dramatic as the one plane in your photo that seems to be soaring downward in a stream of smoke shows. I didn’t know you had a passion for flight … but I can certainly understand why. Great start with the letter “A”, Lynette!

Hi ~ Sure glad you joined us. Love your first entry!! I love planes...my dad has his pilot license, and rented small planes so I've been up in planes since a young girl.

Love your pictures and the planes. Wonderful job with your camera.

Welcome!

FanTAStic photos! (So great to see you back. The blogosphere is not the same without you. Right, kids?) I know what YOU might like - well, for SURE you'd like a floatplane trip around Clayoquot Sound - goes without saying, when you look down you can see islands, beaches, and the outlines of the big bodies of whales in the feeding grounds. Unbelievable from up above. Even better from a zodiac where you can hear the big "whoosh".......but here in Port we have sunset gliding tours - where the small plane in front pulls up the glider plane in back on a long tether, and after they achieve enough altitude and speed, they cut the glider loose and it sifts through the sky on the wind currents. Lori went on it (my birthday gift to her two years ago) and said she could see both sides of the islands, it was fantastic......you float around silently up there (there is a pilot in the glider too, thankfully), and then he sifts it gently down on the runway. Pretty cool. Not my cuppa tea though. I cant figure out how it works without a motor. I have too little trust!

Every time I experience takeoff and lift in an airplane, I always think of that line of poetry about slipping the surly bonds of earth.

Hi Lynette, it's good to meet you. I'm just starting ABC Wednesday again after a few years' absence. Your photos really capture the excitement of airplanes roaring overhead. I live near an airport...luckily it is a small one and not too much traffic, so I get to hear those jet engines several times a day!

Hi, I'm new to ABCW, too; it seems like it's going to be a lot of fun!

Loved your pics; really nice shots. I have to admit that I'm not much of a flyer, but I still think planes are pretty cool. My dad had his private license (until he got hypertension and his BP meds disqualified him; one of the saddest days of his life, I think), and I used to think I'd want to learn someday. That was before I realized I'm really sort of a big 'fraidy cat when it comes to leaving the ground. ;-)

aeroplanes in an airshow in Abbotsford - perfect choice!

I was at the Canadian Warplane Museum a few months back (for a different event) and thought I'd be bored in minutes as I checked out the side with the planes under reconstruction, instead I found it fascinating and enjoyed the enthusiastic knowledge of the vet volunteers.

Wow, these are awesome airplane shots from the air show, Lynette. My faves are the first two of the planes in unison, and then flaring out and down.
